| Reforming The Canadian Healthcare System |

As Canadians, our main concern in regard to the reform of the Canadian healthcare system should be to focus on the original vision for a transformed healthcare delivery system. We are currently experimenting with pay for performance initiatives, wage freezes, private health clinics and Local Health Integration Networks.
In the document "The Sustainability of Medicare" by Hugh Mackenzie and Michael Rachlis, it has been stated that "Medicare funding pressures have been created by tax cuts rather than by increased health care costs".
The average Canadian has been bombarded online with comments regarding the changing structure of the population and the failure to control certain cost drivers delivered by the mainstream media and the Canadian government. Currently Canadians are experiencing worries about waiting lists, finding family doctors and long-term sustainability of the healthcare system. There are significant problems in access and delivery that must be fixed within the Canadian healthcare system.
Many of the recent suggested changes to the Canadian Healthcare system are likely to create a crisis of sustainability.

The Canadian healthcare funding agreement between the federal and provincial / territorial governments in 2004 signalled the end of over a decade of neglect of the Canadian healthcare system. The agreement re-established the role of the Federal government as a reliable partner to Canadian Medicare. Today we must ensure that role is maintained and improvements in management and service delivery occur at the provincial level.
In Ontario alone more than 2,400 RN positions have been cut in the past 18 months and the government is demanding that public-sector union members voluntarily accept a two year wage freeze
Ontario's approximately $20 billion provincial budget deficit.

Although the federal-provincial health accord doesn't expire for well over three years, the Federal government is preparing for a national conversation regarding how to pay for and reform the healthcare system. According to the mainstream media the prime minister, the health minister and the finance minister and their associated offices have been seeking guidance on healthcare reform.
