U of T Student Startups Filling Crucial Knowledge Gap in Dentistry
Joel Meyerson is not your typical doctorate student. A recent graduate with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry, Meyerson not only excelled in his program, but also spent his spare time launching a successful admissions preparation business that provides advice for students looking for a leg up on the interview portion of the admissions process.

Crush Interview

Meyerson’s first company, Crush Interview, quickly gained recognition for its success. In fact, Meyerson’s clients reported an astounding 88% success rate compared to the usual 25% of interviewees who are admitted to professional dental programs. This success has helped Meyerson’s company gain national recognition, and they have recently expanded their services to include medical school interview preparation.

Meyerson has benefitted from hiring a few of his fellow classmates, and he has also branched out to include instructors from Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Medicine, and McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

One of Crush Interview’s first employees, Michael Nightingale, explains the importance of their gap-bridging efforts, “As dental students [we] have absolutely no exposure to the admissions process and are not given any information as to what is expected of a top caliber applicant. This is important because it helps illustrate the amount of hard work and hours Joel has spent coming up with a thorough lesson plan for his clients from scratch.”

Meyerson himself speaks of his companies’ core values quite openly. “We have a mission to be a student service first and a business second.”

DAT Genius

With his feet firmly planted in the entrepreneurial world after the success of his first venture, Meyerson has since turned his attention to other aspects of the admissions process. This attention spawned his online practice test platform – DAT Genius.

According to Meyerson, his vision for DAT Genius was different than what is offered by many existing test prep platforms. His focus was much larger on providing a response to applicant’s unique, individual needs. After completing a mock test, users are given access to detailed explanations of the correct answer for each test question provided.

“With one-on-one tutoring – if a student is fortunate enough to be able to afford it – a student will go through a practice test, then ask their tutor questions about the answers they didn’t get,” Meyerson explains.

While this can be an effective model, Meyerson continues, “The costs are incredibly prohibitive. DAT Genius replicates the tutor experience [so that] users can curate their own knowledge and experiences. But we can do this at a fraction of the cost.”

According to Nightingale, Meyerson’s success stems from his unique entrepreneurial spirit, and when asked about his next step, Meyerson, who plans on joining a dental practice in Wawa, Ontario after graduation, is clearly intent on staying one step ahead of the competition. “Once this learning model has been proven,” Meyerson declares with enthusiasm, “moving on the MCAT makes a lot of sense.”
