Dental Care at your Doorstep
For many Canadian residents, access to quality dental care requires a significant journey away from their normal place of residence. Unfortunately, this can dissuade many people from making regular trips to visit their dentist.

For residents in the Greater Toronto Area that have trouble getting to the dentist, there is good news. While the region already has a number of hearing and foot care specialists that travel directly to their patients, mobile dental hygienists are now also available at your doorstep.

Home Dental Service

This mobile oral cleaning service, which was started late last year by dental hygienist Hamid John, has broken ground to the tune of excited responses, as well as a degree of hesitation. Prior legislation had prevented anyone who wanted his or her teeth cleaned from seeing a hygienist before first visiting a dentist.

Recent changes now allow any hygienist already registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario to obtain a new certification that allows them to provide tooth scaling and other services regardless of whether prior permission from a dentist has been obtained.

Expanding Services to Those That Need it Most

According to John, “The goal of my independent home dental service is to make receiving preventative dental health treatment more accessible. I want to serve seniors, those with disabilities, First Nations communities, families with limited dental insurance, those without any dental benefits, and newcomers.”

Many patients suffer from mobility issues that largely prevent them from getting access to dental services. This results in these patients waiting entirely too long between dental visits, which puts them at an increased risk of developing a number of threatening dental conditions.

Regular dental cleanings are an essential part of maintaining your overall health, and John sees too many people enduring exhaustive wait times or neglecting their dental health entirely. His mobile hygiene clinic is an attempt to address wait times and accessibility to dental care in the Greater Toronto Area.

“This would be more convenient as there would be no need to worry about waiting hours for speciality busing services, booking a support worker, waiting in the clinic and then facing obstacles like weather and traffic,” says John.

Education

In addition to providing mobile dental cleaning services, John is also dedicated to offering free dental education seminars across the region. In a region where experts agree that access to dental services for people with mobility issues needs to be improved, John is taking the bold first step towards such an improvement.

Undoubtedly, John’s services will continue to grow as more Canadians become aware of what he offers. Those that do a little digging will also find that the cost of John’s services can be as much as half of what you’d be charged for a seat in a typical dentist’s chair.

The advent of the Home Dental Service is another response to the growing need for mobile health services in Canada. Healthy Smiles Ontario is also firmly committed to giving more Canadians access to care through their mobile dental clinic.
