The Dental Aptitude Test Program is conducted by the Canadian Dental Association in coordination with the American Dental Association to help students assess their aptitude for a career in dentistry and to assist dental schools in selecting first-year-students. The Dental Aptitude Test Program has been in operation on a national basis since 1966.
Dental school applicants are encouraged to participate in the DAT prior to applying to dental school at least one year before entering dental school. Submission of DAT scores is an admission requirement of each of the 10 Canadian dental schools. It should be noted that U.S. Dental Aptitude Test results cannot be used for admission to Canadian dental schools since the U.S. DAT does not include a manual dexterity component.

A major obstacle for people is not necessarily skill level, but not knowing how to approach an exam like the DAT or to know what to expect.
The DAT is comprised of 4 examinations included in the English DAT and 3 examinations included in the French DAT. The English and French language examinations require approximately 5 and 4 hours respectively which include stretching breaks. Tests are administered over one half day and include a 30 minute Manual Dexterity Test. Not all Canadian dental schools use the Manual Dexterity Test as part of their admission requirements. Currently McGill, the University of Toronto and Western do not require the Manual Dexterity Test Score. The 3 other examinations include a 60 minute Survey of Natural Sciences test involving Biology and General Chemistry, a 60 minute Perceptual Ability test involving angle discrimination, form development, cubes, orthographic projections and apertures and a 50 minute Reading Comprehension test consisting of 3 reading passages in which students are expected to read, organize, analyze and remember new information in dental and basic sciences. Reading materials are typical of materials encountered in the first year of dental school and require a basic undergraduate preparation in science.
ROCK THE DAT is a student-centered DAT Prep course designed to teach the skills necessary for success on the Canadian Dental Association Dental Aptitude Test. ROCK THE DAT was established by the U of A dental students to fundraise for their graduation and help pre-dental students with the DAT. ROCK THE DAT has trained students with great success by preparing students for the Manual Dexterity, Perceptual Ability and Reading Comprehension components of the Canadian Dental Aptitude Test. ROCK THE DAT will also provide tips on how to approach the natural sciences component.
