The Canadian Government Is Investing in Canada’s Future
The future of technology will play a vital role in the development of research at many Canadian universities in the coming years. The government realizes the future success and competitiveness of Canada as a country and Canadian businesses requires an investment today to ensure our country has a place in the global marketplace and can be one of the leading countries in several key technological areas.

To further Canada’s objective of being a leading technological expert in several key areas, the government is investing $900 million in various research and development programs at thirteen of Canada’s universities. The objective is for these institutions to have the funds they need to build and expand current research facilities and become leading research centres in their particular areas of technology. This investment program is being called the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF).

A secondary objective of the CFREF program is to encourage businesses to choose Canada for their research, development, and innovation needs. With thirteen post-secondary institutions being awarded funds to develop cutting edge research centres, it opens up future opportunities to attract interest from businesses, not just here in Canada and North America, but from all around the globe. Businesses can invest money into their own research programs while having the work performed at one of the Canadian universities’ research centres.

The technological areas being funded at three universities’ research centres include:
  • Medical Technologies
  • Brain Health
  • Artificial Intelligence
These universities will share $213 million that will be divided amongst the three research centres located at McGill University, Polytechnique Montréal, and Université de Montréal.

Besides these three universities, ten other institutions will each be receiving a share of the investment the government is making to promote the future of Canada. The ability to make new discoveries in various research areas will be greatly improved thanks to the new government funding. In addition, the research centres will help address future concerns in numerous areas ranging from healthcare to the environment and together will make Canada one of the leading research providers in the world.
